Preventing Ice Dams After a Steel Roof Over

March 19, 2026

Ice dams are usually caused by heat escaping into the attic, melting snow higher on the roof, and refreezing at the colder eaves. A steel roof over shingles can help shed snow and can support a vented assembly, but the real fix is a solid system: air sealing + insulation + balanced soffit-to-ridge ventilation + proper eave protection. March is the perfect time to check for warning signs.

What is an ice dam?

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms near the eaves. Snow melts on the warmer upper roof, runs down, then refreezes at the colder edge. Water can back up under roof materials and appear as staining, dripping, or wet insulation.

Why ice dams are common in Southwestern Ontario

Along the Lake Huron corridor, you get a mix of heavy snow, rapid thaws, and wind-driven drifting. March adds longer daytime temps and sun exposure, which increases melt cycles.

Does a steel roof reduce ice dams?

Steel roofing often sheds snow more quickly than shingles, which can reduce snow sitting on the roof for long periods.

Still, if warm air is leaking into the attic, you can get melt and refreeze on any roof type. Steel is not a standalone solution, it is part of the full assembly.

Roof overs and ice dams: what changes?

When you install steel over existing shingles, you can build a system that supports winter performance.

  • Vented strapping assemblies can create an air space above the shingles, which helps manage heat and incidental moisture.
  • Direct-to-deck roof overs can work too, as long as ventilation is balanced and eave protection is correct.

The real solution: the “4-part” ice dam strategy

1) Air seal first
Tiny gaps around light fixtures, attic hatches, plumbing stacks, and top plates can leak warm air into the attic. Warm air is the fuel for melt.

2) Insulate to keep heat where it belongs
Insulation reduces heat transfer from the home into the attic. Uneven insulation can create hot spots that melt snow.

What to do: Confirm insulation is evenly distributed and not compressed. Make sure baffles keep insulation out of soffit vents.

3) Balance soffit intake and ridge exhaust

Ventilation helps keep the roof deck cold in winter and dry year-round.

Good ventilation looks like:

  • Continuous soffit intake where possible
  • A clear air path up the underside of the deck
  • Ridge exhaust that is not blocked by insulation

If soffit intake is limited, upgrading soffit and fascia venting can make a significant difference.

Soffit upgrades often support roof performance.

4) Protect eaves and valleys
At the eaves and valleys, water is most likely to back up during freeze–thaw.

What to look for in a quote:

  • Continuous soffit intake where possible
  • A clear air path up the underside of the deck
  • Ridge exhaust that is not blocked by insulation

Snow management matters too

Even with great ventilation, drifting snow can create uneven melt patterns.

  • Use snow guards where sliding snow could be hazardous, over doors, walkways, decks, and garage aprons.
  • Keep gutters and downspouts clear so meltwater can drain.

March thaw checklist, 10 minutes

1. Inside the home

  • Check ceilings and exterior walls for staining, especially near roof edges.
  • Look for bubbling paint or damp drywall.

2. In the attic, if safe

  • Look for frost on nails, damp insulation, or dark staining on the underside of the deck.
  • Check that soffit vents are not blocked by insulation.

3. Outside, from the ground

  • Look for thick ice at eaves or icicles that return after each thaw.
  • Check downspouts for ice blockage and make sure water is draining away from the foundation.

What Not to Do

  • Do not chip ice off panels or edges, it can damage coatings and trim.
  • Avoid running water up under laps when rinsing the roof.
  • Heat cables can help in specific situations, but they are rarely the best first solution. Fix heat loss and ventilation first.

FAQs

  • Will a roof over trap moisture and create ice dams?

Not when the assembly includes correct underlayments and balanced ventilation. A vented strapping approach can help manage incidental moisture and heat.

  • Do I need snow guards to prevent ice dams?

Snow guards control sliding snow for safety. They do not fix attic heat loss. They work best as part of a full winter plan.

  • Can improving soffit ventilation really make a difference?

Yes. Intake ventilation is often the missing piece. Without sufficient intake, ridge exhaust cannot do its job.

  • Why did ice dams start after I improved insulation?

Sometimes insulation changes can block soffit airflow if baffles are missing or displaced. The fix is usually restoring airflow while keeping insulation in place.

  • Is a steel roof louder when ice slides?

Occasional snow release can be heard outside. Inside the home, sound levels are typically similar to other roof systems when installed over a solid deck.
